Mississippi Museum of Art and The Art Garden

Mississippi Bureau of Buildings and Grounds

Yates Construction provided construction services for the Mississippi Museum of Art. A beautiful new home for the museum and its permanent collection of art, the new facility has rapidly advanced in terms of capabilities, technology, and the overall philosophy of what an art museum means to the community. The lobby and entryway are filled with light through the inclusion of a large amount of glass, accomplished by raising the roof. This technique breaks down barriers and creates a transparent front door that makes everyone feel welcome. A vibrant café encourages visitors to sit and relax, and a newly-added front porch on the facility, located at the helm of the downtown cultural district, creates a welcoming and comfortable space.

Designed as a museum without walls, The Art Garden is a 1.2-acre versatile, open, outdoor space featuring a welcoming lawn, seasonal foliage, native garden beds, permanent art installations, water features, and a performance space. The loading dock at the neighboring Thalia Mara Hall was also remodeled to accommodate The Art Garden. The project included the installation of a green screening system that allows plants and vines to grow on the screen to prevent the view of the loading dock of the neighboring facility.
